The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced substantial revisions to Aadhaar card services for 2025, impacting over a billion citizens. From October 1, 2025, the fees for updating Aadhaar details will increase. Demographic updates, such as changing names, addresses, dates of birth, or mobile numbers, will now cost Rs 75, up from Rs 50. Biometric updates, including fingerprints and iris scans, will cost Rs 125, an increase from Rs 100. These new rates are set to continue until 2028. The UIDAI cites service quality and technological advancements as reasons for the hike.
In a positive development for families, biometric updates for children between the ages of 7 and 15 will be offered free of charge. This initiative aims to ensure that children's facial and fingerprint recognition, which changes significantly during these years, are periodically updated without financial burden.
A significant digital transformation is scheduled for November 1, 2025. Citizens will reportedly be able to update key demographic information like name, address, date of birth, gender, and mobile number entirely online, without needing to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. This new system is expected to rely on automatic verification through government databases and digital technologies. However, updates requiring physical scans, such as biometric changes, will still necessitate a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
The UIDAI also released a new list of acceptable documents for Aadhaar enrollment and updates in July 2025, setting clear standards for all citizens, including NRIs and HUFs. It reiterated that individuals should possess only one Aadhaar number. The free online document update facility, which ended on June 14, 2025, means citizens who missed this window will now incur fees for updates.
